The role of mini excavators in wasteland reclamation

  • Update time: 2025-04-02

Land levelling and improvement

 Land levelling

Wasteland usually has uneven, pitted and undulating terrain, and mini excavators are able to carry out precise excavation and filling operations on the land through the coordinated operation of their buckets and tracks. For example, in wasteland with mounds and pits, the excavator can cut down the mounds and fill the pits with soil, so that the land gradually becomes flat, creating favourable conditions for subsequent reclamation work.

 Improvement of soil

A mini excavator can be used with other tools or equipment to improve the soil of wasteland. For example, by digging trenches of a certain depth, it can mix high-quality topsoil with deep soil to improve the structure, aeration and water retention of the soil. Organic fertilisers, lime and other amendments can also be mixed thoroughly with the soil to improve soil fertility and provide a good soil environment for crop growth.

 Removal of obstacles

 Removing trees and bushes

Various trees, bushes and other vegetation often grow on wasteland, which can occupy land space and affect the reclamation work. Mini excavators can use their powerful digging capacity and flexible manoeuvrability to uproot and remove trees and bushes. For example, for trees of smaller diameter, the excavator can dig them out directly with the bucket; for trees of larger diameter, the roots can be broken with attachments such as crushing hammers before clearing them.

 Clearing stones and debris

There may be a large number of stones and debris scattered in the wasteland, etc. These substances will not only affect the levelness of the land, but may also cause damage to the subsequent agricultural machinery and equipment. A mini excavator can easily dig out these stones and debris and concentrate them in piles or transport them away, making the land cleaner and neater for subsequent reclamation and planting.

 Constructing Irrigation and Drainage Systems

 Digging irrigation channels

In the process of reclaiming wasteland, irrigation is an important part of ensuring crop growth. Small excavators can dig suitable irrigation channels according to the terrain and water sources to bring water into the field. For example, in high terrain, top-down irrigation channels can be dug to realise self-flow irrigation by using gravity; in flat terrain, criss-crossing channel networks can be dug to ensure even distribution of water.

 Installation of drainage facilities

A good drainage system is essential to prevent waterlogging on farmland and avoid problems such as soil salinisation. Small excavators can dig drainage ditches in low-lying areas to drain excess water out of the field. At the same time, drainage culverts, drainage pipes and other facilities can be set up according to the actual situation to improve drainage efficiency.

 Assisting other reclamation work

 Assisting in well-drilling operations

In some wasteland areas where water is scarce, drilling wells to obtain groundwater is an effective way to solve irrigation problems. Small excavators can play an important role in the process of drilling wells, such as assisting drilling rigs to carry out site levelling, digging the soil around the wellhead, carrying drilling equipment, etc., to improve the efficiency of drilling wells and ensure the smooth progress of drilling wells.

 Co-operation with farm building construction

After reclaiming the wasteland, it may be necessary to build farmhouses, warehouses and other ancillary facilities. Small excavators can carry out foundation excavation, earth backfilling and other work to provide basic support for the construction of these facilities. For example, when constructing a farmhouse, the excavator can excavate the foundation trench for the house and then carry out work such as concrete pouring and wall masonr
